Physician Highlight:
H. Robert Hixson, MD

Robert Hixson always knew he wanted a profession that allowed him to help others.  When he was 12 years old, he decided to redirect his attention from becoming a veterinarian to a medical physician so that he could care for people.  Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Robert attended a small liberal arts college before moving to Memphis, Tennessee for medical school. During college, he enjoyed all of his radiology rotations, but his love for the intensive training of the brain ultimately peaked his interest.  He completed his internship in Newport News, Virginia before moving to Charlottesville, Virginia for his residency, fellowship and an additional two years of neuro interventional as well as diagnostic training. The combination of neuro and diagnostic specialties fit him like a glove.  “I love being a detective in diagnosing a problem,” explained Dr. Hixson. He continued, “Influencing and being hands-on in patient care is what makes my job so fulfilling.”

Dr. Hixson joined Vista Radiology in 2017. He was impressed with how well established the group’s neuro interventional program was and wanted to be part of the high level care.  “I enjoy working in a program with some of the most innovative technology advancements.”  Nestled near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Vista Radiology was the perfect fit for a self-professed lover of the outdoors.  It also allowed he and his wife to live near their family.

In his spare time, Dr. Hixson enjoys playing with his son and spending time mountain biking with his wife.  He is an avid mountain climber having topped the likes of Mount Rainier in Washington, Mont Blanc in Italy as well as mountains in Ecuador. His love for outdoor adventures led him to pursue an Advanced Wilderness Life Support Certification which included training in alpine, swift water rapid, and dessert medicine.
